Sainsbury's has opened its highly-anticipated flagship store in Barnet on Wednesday (November 20). The 43,000 sq ft development on Hendon's Henshaw Place combines the supermarket's three brands - Argos, Habitat, and Tu Clothing - in one place, alongside the usual everyday groceries.

It also boasts an Asian street food kiosk, huge Free From section and a Timpson concession. Shoppers can pick up a coffee from a Costa on the ground floor too.

There is also undercover parking with space for 250 cars, as well as 10 'ultra-rapid' electric vehicle charging bays. This is one of 20 supermarkets Sainsbury's hoes to deliver within the next 18 months, including potential sites in Maida Vale and Camberwell.

The Hendon superstore is part of the Silkstream regeneration project, a plan that will see 1,300 new homes, a park, public gardens, and oxbow lake built in The Hyde.

Sainsbury’s director of group property, procurement & EV ventures, Patrick Dunne said: “From our development partners to our brilliant store team and everyone in the local community, I’d like to express my thanks for all the incredible support we’ve received for this project so far.

"We’re really looking forward to hearing what customers think of their brand new supermarket and we look forward to seeing Silkstream continue to grow and flourish in the coming years.”

The project was met with complaints when it was first announced by developer The Berkeley Group in 2020. 860 objections were made to Barnet Council's planning department, with most citing the loss of the petrol station, lengthy construction time, and the height of the 28-storey housing complex.

You can find Sainsbury's Hendon at 2 Henshaw Parade.
