Bransholme residents celebrating warmer homes and lower bills
Bransholme residents now have warmer homes that are cheaper to heat, thanks to a money-saving, carbon-reducing scheme.
Energy and regeneration specialist Equans has carried out the £10.8million improvement programme to over 180 homes in the area, on behalf of Hull City Council. The houses, bungalows, and flats on Bransholme now have new external wall insulation, improved cavity wall and loft insulation, and new windows, doors, and roofs - all of which help keep heating bills low by preventing warmth from escaping.
Residents can expect to save up to £550 annually on their energy bills and carbon emissions will be reduced by 1.9 tonnes of carbon per property per year – the equivalent of the amount of carbon produced by driving around 10,000 miles in a small petrol car. Ventilation systems have also been updated to help air to circulate and reduce the likelihood of damp occurring.

Resident Maureen Harrison, aged 81, has lived on Bransholme for almost 60 years, she said: “The house was very cold in winter. We had to wear jumpers and use blankets when we were on the sofa. But now we don’t have to do that.
“My husband has already said it feels more snug inside because the new windows aren’t draughty and they’re a lot easier to open to let fresh air in too. It has been a job well done.
"I’d tell anyone else due to have the work done to go for it. The house is a lot better, it’s brilliant.”

Steve Batty, Director of Sustainability at Equans, commented: “Projects like this one are crucial in helping to reduce fuel poverty and drive down the country’s carbon emissions.
“Following the recent increase in energy costs, it’s more important than ever that we work together to help households keep their bills as low as possible. I’m delighted that these residents can benefit from cheaper to heat homes in time for winter.
Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Housing, said: “Rising energy costs and loss of the Winter Fuel payment has dealt a double whammy to many people trying to keep warm their homes warm this winter. Thanks to our partnership with Equans and the insulation and energy efficiency work carried out, we’ve been able to help some of our residents who live on Bransholme. I look forward to the partnership continuing so that more homes can be warmer, more comfortable, and cheaper to run.”
