She continues to work every day at the village nursery - which she built with her own money in 1992 - whilst hooked up to an intravenous drip.

Li and her husband built the Beicun Kindergarten, the first privately owned kindergarten in the region, and she teaches 48 of the village's children.

She also paid £8,000 for the cost of rebuilding two small bridges into the village over a river, back in 2007.

The village is regularly ravaged by floods and storms, so they built the nursery in a safe area on high ground.

Her tenacity and work ethic has been appreciated by all the villagers in Liangjiabei Village, in East China’s Shandong Province, who are praying for her full recovery.

She has been receiving regular treatment over the past three years and is simply refusing to give in.

Villager De Liang said: 'We all know, because of the extra work they do around the village to earn money, that the nursery does not pay enough to cover their bills, but the couple have pressed on to give the children here the opportunity of having a brighter future.'
