Cameron Archer has completed a permanent transfer to Southampton from Aston Villa in a deal worth £15m plus add-ons.

The striker had returned to Bodymoor Heath in June following Sheffield United's relegation to the Championship. He was sold on a permanent basis, but there was an agreement that he'd go back to Villa if the Blades dropped out of the top-flight.

Archer was also of interest to clubs on the continent this summer, including Spanish club Getafe and Union Berlin of the Bundesliga. He held talks with Bournemouth earlier this summer, but a move never materialised.

The 22-year-old made 28 appearances for Sheffield United last season and scored four goals, including at Villa Park in the 1-1 draw in December. He put the Blades ahead late on, before Nicolo Zaniolo levelled the game up in the 97th minute. He also scored against Everton, Wolves and Luton Town.

In Ollie Watkins' absence during pre-season, Archer scored three goals in friendlies against Spartak Trnava, Columbus Crew and Athletic Bilbao. He featured in six of the seven matches Villa played over the summer.

Archer has made a total of 14 first-team appearances for Villa since scoring a hat-trick on his first-team debut in the 6-0 win at Barrow in the Carabao Cup three years ago.

The forward had spells out on loan at Solihull Moors, Preston North End and Middlesbrough before his move to Bramall Lane last summer.
