Jamie Vardy’s iconic Leicester City story goes on with the striker signing a new one-year contract at the club.

Vardy’s previous deal expired at the end of this month but after powering City to the Championship title with a 20-goal campaign across all competitions, he has earned himself an extension to his stay at the King Power Stadium. He will now prepare for a 13th season with the club.

Supporters had not wanted to see Vardy’s time at City end, chanting for him to sign up for “10 more years” during the final few months of the season. His new deal means they will get to see him wear his number nine shirt once again.

In the end, the decision to award Vardy a new contract didn’t have to be an emotional one. While he will turn 38 during the upcoming Premier League campaign and his powers are not what they once were, he showed he has not lost his goalscoring knack. He bagged 12 goals in his final 16 Championship outings to reach 20 for the season and finish as the club’s leading scorer.

A one-year deal gives Vardy the opportunity to become just the third player in the club’s history to reach 200 goals. He needs to find the net 10 more times for that. Plus, 16 more games will see him overtake Kasper Schmeichel in third on the club’s all-time appearance list.
