While many people know to check their breasts for lumps, there are many other signs and symptoms that may indicate breast cancer, and one can show up in two other body parts. Though it mainly affects women, men can get it too.

The cancer, which is the most common form in the UK, sees one woman diagnosed every 10 minutes. Breast Cancer Awareness also runs the whole month of October where charity Breast Cancer Now raises awareness of checking for symptoms and abnormalities.

A new NHS post on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday is urging people to check their breasts, and reads: "Breast cancer can cause a number of signs and symptoms. Get used to checking regularly and be aware of anything that’s new or different for you."

A graphic included within the post explains that while a new lump, thickening, or bumpy area in one breast or armpit can be a main symptom of breast cancer, there are six other red flags to look out for - and one of these may show up in the armpit or around the collarbone. A swelling in these areas can be a warning sign.

Other symptoms include a change in the size, outline or shape of your breast, discharge of fluid from either of your nipples, changes in your skin such as puckering, dimpling, colour or a rash, and/or any change in nipple position, such as becoming pulled in, or pointing differently, as well as breast swelling.

An eczema-like rash, crusting, scaly, itching or redness on or around the nipple can also be a symptom. NHS guidance adds: "It's important to check your breasts regularly so you know what's normal for you. This makes it easier to notice any changes in the size, look or feel of your breasts."

You should see your GP if you notice any breast changes and/or any of the above symptoms.
