350 men in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer every year

Despite 350 men being diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK alone every year, research showed that 24 per cent of men don't think they could be affected by the condition. The risks increase as they get older – those affected can develop the disease when they are over 60.

Symptoms of breast cancer in men can be easy to spot if you regularly check yourself – but if you are worried you should always seek advice from your GP.

2. Scaliness around the nipple
3. Tenderness or skin irritation
4. Nipple discharge
5. Pain and inflammation in the nipple area
6. The nipple beginning to turn on itself

Other symptoms could also include bone pain, swelling around the armpit, shortness of breath, nausea and itchy skin.

It's important to consider other factors to determine if you could be at risk. For example, men with higher oestrogen levels or who have history of cancer in their family could be more at risk. Being overweight or leading a particularly unhealthy lifestyle could also increase chances of a diagnosis – speak with your GP if you are concerned.
