BBC’s Mrs Brown’s Boys could be axed as early as next year, according to its creator and star Brendan O’Carroll.

The popular BBC comedy series, which has been airing since 2011, could be set for its last ever Christmas special.

Speaking to the Daily Star O’Caroll said he wants to focus purely on the show’s spin-off All Round To Mrs Brown’s which has Mrs Brown interview celebrity guests in a talk show style format.

He noted that the spin-off was becoming very similar to the original series anyway.

“It’s becoming more of a sitcom and more of our characters are creeping into the show,’ O’Carroll said.

In a previous interview with the same publication O’Carroll had also hinted at killing off his character Agnes Brown if the BBC said so.

“We are booked to do Christmas specials for the BBC until 2020 but if they go, ‘We are going to drop you as we don’t think it’s strong enough’ then I’d kill Agnes off.

“Our final episode would be the funniest show I’ve ever written for the first 24 minutes. Then the last four minutes would break your f*****g heart,” he said.

Of course this will almost certainly not happen now as Brown is the central character in the spin-off series.

This is not the first time Mrs Brown’s Boys has been rumoured to be on the chopping block. Despite the show being hugely successful both in the UK and in Australia and New Zealand – and even spawning a successful stage show and a movie – it has consistently been panned by critics.

And on top of this, the show was caught up in a tax avoidance scandal last year. O’Carroll’s own daughter Fiona Delany, her husband Paddy and his co-star Paddy Houlihan were turned in by BBC’s Panorama for using a tax scheme that allowed them to pay lower taxes for their earnings from the show.

A new live show also has just been announced, ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys: D’Musical,’ for Spring 2019.
