Brentford host Chelsea in a west London derby in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

The Bees have not played for 12 days - a dramatic 2-1 win over Watford on December 10 - after seeing successive Premier League matches against Manchester United and Southampton postponed amid the recent Covid-19 chaos.

Chelsea, meanwhile, tried to have Sunday’s match at Wolves called off due to their coronavirus and injury issues, though that request was rejected by the top-flight - much to the anger of manager Thomas Tuchel, who believes the season continuing is putting the health and safety of players at risk.

A goalless draw at Molineux saw the slumping Blues slip six points adrift in the title race, so they will be hoping for a timely lift in a competition they have won five times but not since 2015, beating both Aston Villa and Southampton on penalties to reach the quarter-finals.

Tuchel’s counterpart Thomas Frank has also publicly advocated for a temporary stoppage to “break the chain” on the Covid chaos. His side sit comfortably in 12th in their first top-tier season for 74 years and eliminated EFL sides Oldham and Forest Green in the Carabao Cup before holding on to beat Stoke in the last-16 in October.

Brentford reached the semis last year, losing a London derby against Tottenham.

Brentford vs Chelsea prediction

Chelsea were indebted to the heroics of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for helping to seal an unlikely 1-0 win on this ground in the League back in October.

The Bees piled on relentless pressure in a bid to cancel out Chilwell’s first-half goal, but just could not find a way past the inspired Senegal international.

As with any game at the moment, much will depend on what players are available to both sides during the current Covid nightmare.

But Chelsea are looking a shadow of the side that easily topped the Premier League just a few short weeks ago, either undone by a lack of chances or sloppy defending.

Brentford, meanwhile, have lost only one of their last five games and tend to turn up for big nights in front of their own fans.

This could go either way, but we’re backing the Bees to cause an upset and reach the semis once again.
