Brentford vs Manchester City - LIVE!

Man City have a huge chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table as they travel to west London to take on Brentford.

City have won nine games in a row in the league since early November and have opened up a six-point lead ahead of Liverpool and Chelsea at the halfway stage of the season.

Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Leicester on Tuesday night and Pep Guardiola will be desperate to see his side take full advantage by expanding the gap as they seek to defend their title.

City’s form makes tonight’s fixture look a daunting proposition for Brentford, who have been hit hard by injuries, suspensions and Covid absences.

Thomas Frank will, nonetheless, be hoping his side can round off a momentous 2021 with another famous evening at their new home.

FT: Brentford 0-1 Man City

22:07 , Malik Ouzia

The champions are eight points clear.

22:05 , Malik Ouzia

90+1 mins: Three minutes to be added...

22:03 , Malik Ouzia

90 mins: Into the final minute of the 90 but there may well be a decent bit added now...

22:00 , Malik Ouzia

Another one chalked!

De Bruyne’s free-kick is headed down and in by Laporte, who is off in celebration thinking he’s sealed it.

But VAR wants a look and, having been on the right side of a marginal call for the opening goal, this one goes against City.

21:57 , Malik Ouzia

84 mins: A little surprising that Pep Guardiola is yet to turn to his bench - looks like he’s trying to make sure the players he has rested tonight do get the evening off, with Arsenal to come at the weekend. Could be a risky ploy, though.

21:57 , Malik Ouzia

84 mins: A little surprising that Pep Guardiola is yet to turn to his bench - looks like he’s trying to make sure the players he has rested tonight do get the evening off, with Arsenal to come at the weekend. Could be a risky ploy, though.

21:55 , Malik Ouzia

81 mins: Concern for Brentford because Dominic Thomspon, who is already covering for first-choice left-back Rico Henry, doesn’t look like he can continue, having been hobbling around for the last ten minutes or so.

Saman Ghoddos is on in his place.

21:50 , Malik Ouzia

77 mins: Half a chance for Fernandinho as Foden’s corner is only half-cleared and the ball breaks to the skipper, but he shanks it miles wide. Guardiola is head in hands again.

21:45 , Malik Ouzia

72 mins: Pep Guardiola does not look at all comfortable as his side conceded a pretty cheap corner and have to soak up a bit of Brentford pressure.

They’ve stayed in the game, the home side, and they will fancy a late charge.

21:41 , Malik Ouzia

69 mins: And here comes the first Brentford change of the night - Yoanne Wissa is the man to make way as Sergi Canos enters the fray.

21:40 , Malik Ouzia

68 mins: Brentford fans are ‘Ole-ing’ as they enjoy a rare decent spell of possession.

21:39 , Malik Ouzia

66 mins: Off the post!

The closest City have come to a second as De Bruyne strikes low from range towards the near post. It comes through the legs and Fernandez is a little slow across but the post comes to his rescue.

21:33 , Malik Ouzia

59 mins: There’s a prime example of it. Jesus gifts the ball away to Wissa, who charges away but is instantly surrounded by four men in blue with no one in red and white ahead of him.

21:27 , Malik Ouzia

54 mins: City have been sharper since the break, more aggressive in their press, and for the first time in the game Brentford are hanging in there a bit, struggling to get out.

21:25 , Malik Ouzia

52 mins: The full-time whistle has just gone across west London at Stamford Bridge, where Danny Welbeck’s 91st minute equaliser has earned Brighton a point against Chelsea.

The upshot is that as things stand, City are going eight points clear at the top.

21:24 , Malik Ouzia

This time he is offside. Jesus dinks a little ball in to Foden, who makes no mistake with his header, but the flag is rightly raised. A yard or so off.

21:20 , Malik Ouzia

46 mins: And almost a second immediately.

It’s very similar to the goal in that it’s a terrific ball from De Bruyne from that same area of the pitch and Foden is again the target.

This time, the Englishman flicks towards the far corner and the ball drifts only a foot wide with Fernandez beaten.

21:19 , Malik Ouzia

We are back underway...

Here’s the goal that separates the two sides...

21:09 , Malik Ouzia

21:08 , Malik Ouzia

Man City have had 81 per cent of the possession, but both sides have had an equal number of shots (four) and it’s Brentford who have actually had one more on target.

Plenty of cause for optimism for the Bees, but it’s still a huge task to come from behind against this City side.

HT: Brentford 0-1 Man City

21:03 , Malik Ouzia

A decent tussle in west London but a moment of real quality from the champions is the difference at the break.

21:01 , Malik Ouzia

45+1 mins: Jensen has been right in the wars. First the referee and now the ball, which hits him right in the face as he scampers out to close down Fernandinho’s strike.

21:00 , Malik Ouzia

45 mins: Just a minute to add on...

20:58 , Malik Ouzia

43 mins: Ah ha, and there’s the reprisal. Literally, 30 seconds later, Fernandinho’s in a tussle with Jensen and as he goes down, Toney comes over and gives him a little tread on the shin, too.

No card for either, so at least there’s a bit of consistency.

20:57 , Malik Ouzia

42 mins: Textbook undercover villainy from Fernandinho. Toney is up duelling against Dias again and is penalised for a foul but that’s not all he gets for his troubles as the Brazilian steams over and treads on his toes.

20:55 , Malik Ouzia

39 mins: Jack Grealish has cut a pretty frustrated figure so far. He’s not really been heavily involved as the likes of Foden, De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva have floated around the pitch.

20:51 , Malik Ouzia

36 mins: Ivan Toney’s been absolutely superb for Brentford so far, working hard defensively, closing people down, holding the ball up. He’s earned a free-kick in a decent crossing position here, though Jensen leathered one of these straight out for a goal-kick a minute ago.

This one’s better but Ake gets up best and heads against Toney and behind for a goal-kick.

20:48 , Malik Ouzia

32 mins: City have dominated possession, up around 80 per cent at last count, but it’s taken that moment of De Bruyne quality to unlock Brentford.

Alvaro Fernandez hasn’t made a save yet.

20:44 , Malik Ouzia

28 mins: Good defending, this. Jensen arcs in a menacing delivery from a fairly unpromising crossing position and Jansson has peeled off the back of his man but Fernandinho manages to get a crucial flick on it to send it beyond the Brentford captain and behind.

20:41 , Malik Ouzia

25 mins: Brentford aren’t happy here - Mathias Jensen has been accidentally clattered by the referee, who then tells him to get up and doesn’t immediately bother stopping play. Luckily, the ball soon goes back to Ederson anyway and the game can be halted for a moment.

20:36 , Malik Ouzia

21 mins: Thomas Frank is out cajoling his team. After a conservative start, they’d enjoyed a really good few minutes but the quality of City - and De Bruyne in particular - has undone them.

GOAL! Brentford 0-1 Man City | Phil Foden 17'

20:32 , Malik Ouzia

Less than a minute after clearing off their own line, City are ahead.

It’s one of those trademark deliveries from the inside right position from De Bruyne and Foden is just about played onside by the trailing leg of Pinnock as he steers home in the middle.

20:31 , Malik Ouzia

15 mins: How’s this not gone in?!

First of all, Onyeka’s cross is almost deflected past his own ‘keeper by Dias. Ederson palms it round the post, but from the corner Pinnock heads down and Wissa squeezes it across the face of goal.

Toney thinks it’s going to loop up for him to nod in on the line but Ake makes a wonderful clearances.

20:30 , Malik Ouzia

14 mins: Oof, and how’s this for confidence?

Jensen wins it in midfield and immediately turns tries to lob Ederson from halfway. Had it been on target, the City ‘keeper might’ve been in trouble but it fades wide.

20:28 , Malik Ouzia

12 mins: Terrific from the home side. Brentford press superbly and Dias is scrambling back towards his own goal with nowhere to go.

The men in red and white nick it and after a couple of sharp, one-touch passes, Onyeka gets away down the left, too quick and strong for Cancelo, but his effort from the angle is too close to Ederson.

20:25 , Malik Ouzia

10 mins: Fernandinho has just pinged an absolutely wonderful pass over the head of Thompson for Jesus, but the Brazilian rather spoils it but letting the ball bounce over his foot. It was a proper peach.

20:22 , Malik Ouzia

6 mins: A heavy lay-off from De Bruyne allows Toney to work back and nick the ball for Brentford, but De Bruyne is just relentless in his pressing and charges down Sorensen’s attempt at a clearance. Probing start from the visitors.

20:18 , Malik Ouzia

2 mins: The first notable attack of the night is a City one and no surprise that Kevin de Bruyne is involved. The Belgian, who has looked right back to his best in the last few weeks, drives from inside his own half before releasing to Grealish, but his cross is deflected behind for a corner.

20:15 , Malik Ouzia

We are underway in west London...

20:14 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, the teams are out, the stage is set. Almost showtime...

20:11 , Malik Ouzia

For one last time in 2021, Hey Jude is ringing around the ground ahead of kick-off at Brentford. Another terrific atmosphere.

Can they deliver another marquee result?

20:00 , Malik Ouzia

It really has been a magnificent 2021 for Brentford. They started the year still smarting from a playoff final defeat to Fulham the previous August but rallied to reach Wembley again, where they saw off Swansea to finally reach the Premier League - and return to the top flight for the first time since 1947.

They beat Arsenal on the opening day of the season on a glorious night and took a point off Liverpool at the Brentford Community Stadium, but a home win tonight might just top the lot as they close out the year.

The champions heading into new territory a little earlier on...

Three changes for Bees

19:37 , Malik Ouzia

As for Brentford, the absences of Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard, because of injury and suspension, respectively, are big blows.

Yoanne Wissa and Frank Onyeka are their replacements, while Mads Roerslev also comes in at right-wing-back as Thomas Frank makes three changes to his side.

Foden, Grealish return

19:26 , Malik Ouzia

So, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden are back in the City starting XI tonight after their ticking off from Pep Guardiola, and they’re joined in attack by Gabriel Jesus as the Spaniard makes four changes to his side.

The other sees Nathan Ake come in in place of Oleksandr Zinchenko, so either he or Aymeric Laporte will fill in at left-back, you presume.

Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay GündoÄŸan are the other players to drop out of the lineup, with Rodri still missing.

Thomas Frank has been speaking about the frustration of his side’s injury woes as they prepare to face the Premier League champions tonight.

“We are playing against the team with potentially the biggest budget in the division and the greatest manager of the modern era,” the Bees boss said.

“They have unbelievable players and a very specific style of play that makes it quite difficult for a team like us. They are so good at keeping the ball and they almost never risk it. It is going to be very difficult.

“The good news is that we have done quite well against the two other top teams in the division, Liverpool and Chelsea. I wanted to play them with full strength. When we played Liverpool and Chelsea, we played our strongest side and we proved we can do something.

“I promise we will put a side out there that will run and fight; we will do everything we can to tweak it and take our advantages in the game.”

Head-to-head results

18:40 , Malik Ouzia

After losing to the Bees on Christmas Day 1937, City only won one meeting until 1989. Their last match came in the 1997 FA Cup third round.

Brentford wins: 5

Draws: 1

Man City wins: 7

Standard Sport prediction

18:27 , Malik Ouzia

Both teams will be impacted by injuries, Covid and fatigue which could serve to limit the breathlessness of the match. Still, City should have enough to see out a win.

Man City to win, 1-0.

Brentford team news

18:13 , Malik Ouzia

Bryan Mbeumo was forced off during the first-half of the defeat at Brighton and could miss out here, with Vitaly Janelt out due to Covid-19. Mads Roerslev may be fit to return from his positive test.

Rico Henry, Kristoffer Ajer (both thigh), David Raya (knee), Josh Dasilva (hip), Charlie Goode (thigh), Julian Jeanvier (knee) and Christian Norgaard (suspended) will all be unavailable.

Man City team news

17:59 , Malik Ouzia

Pep Guardiola will decide whether to recall Phil Foden and Jack Grealish, who have been dropped for wins against Newcastle and Leicester after being pictured on a night out after the 7-0 win against Leeds.

The City boss has warned his payers that they must behave on and off the pitch in order to be picked, and he will decide whether bring Foden or Grealish back into the team.

Guardiola has said he will wait until the day of the game before finalising his plans for the trip to the Brentford Community Stadium.

John Stones, Rodri and Kyle Walker were all unavailable for the Leicester game with a number of youngsters, such as Cole Palmer, hoping for a runout.
