Scottish Brexit Party MEP Brian Monteith bellowed “freedom!” at the end of a speech in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on December 18 in the style of the Scottish legend William Wallace, as portrayed by Mel Gibson in the 1995 film Braveheart.

Following the result of the country’s December 12 general election, the UK is likely to formally leave the EU in early 2020, meaning MEPs from the country will no longer attend the parliament.

Monteith stood up to deliver what he said might be his last speech to the institution.

Monteith said: “This jumped up, virtue-signalling student union is not even about a United States of Europe. Instead it works ceaselessly to merge everyone into one homogenized blob! The UK wants no part of that! We are leaving and good riddance!”

The European Parliament Vice President Mairead McGuinness appealed for calm and less “dog-whistling,” before she quipped at Monteith, “Being Irish, I understand what you mean by freedom.” Credit: European Parliament via Storyful
