Good afternoon.

This week, Theresa May hopes to finally iron out the Government’s desired future relationship with the European Union post-Brexit. Boris Johnson indicated on Wednesday that he understood the potential use of following same regulations as the EU on areas like manufacturing goods. That pragmatism may explain why the Prime Minister felt able to argue on ITV's This Morning today that she felt secure in her job and didn't fear being "stabbed in the back" by her colleagues.

The British would still seek a clean break on other areas, a goal European leaders could help them achieve judging by Angela Merkel saying on Friday that a bespoke deal for Britain didn’t strictly amount to allowing them to “cherry pick” what they like.

European leaders seem to be looking forward to the eventual result, with Chancellor Merkel describing herself last week as “curious” to know “how Britain envisages this future partnership”. That won’t come until Thursday, when ministers gather at Mrs May’s country retreat of Chequers to thrash out their Brexit strategy once and for all.

That doesn’t mean they will be starved of detail until then. David Davis is speaking in Vienna tomorrow morning. Anything the Brexit Secretary says on how Britain will handle standards and regulation outside of the EU will be pored over at length in Berlin, Brussels, and beyond.
