Brexit deal vote: what will MPs vote on in the Commons this week?

MPs are due to pass their verdict on Theresa May's Brexit deal for the second time this week as the clock ticks down to Britain's exit from the European Union.

The Prime Minister had hoped to secure concessions on her controversial blueprint after January's overwhelming defeat by 230 votes in the Commons.

But as Downing Street acknowledged negotiations were "deadlocked", speculation in Westminster has centred on the possibility of the PM watering down her commitment to hold a second "meaningful vote".

It is thought she might ask Parliament to vote on a "conditional" motion expressing its readiness to support a form of deal other than the one agreed with Brussels.

But Mrs May's official spokesman confirmed it remains the plan to stage the "meaningful vote" on the Brexit deal on Tuesday.

Here is what you need to know about the vote and week ahead in Brexit.

What will happen today?

The motion for the crunch Commons vote is due to be tabled later on Monday.

This will come alongside the publication of the documents setting out the deal, including the Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration agreed in November.

The legal advice of Attorney General Geoffrey Cox is also expected to be published.

When will the vote be held?

The vote is expected to be held on Tuesday evening following a debate.

The exact time will by announced by the Government.

The PM's spokesman confirmed on Monday that it remains the plan to stage the "meaningful vote" tomorrow.

What are MPs voting on?

MPs are voting on Mrs May's deal with the European Union for the second time.

The PM spent two years negotiating the deal with the EU.

What happens if MPs reject the deal?

If Mrs May's deal fails in the Commons it will lead to possible further votes in the coming days.

The first will take place by Wednesday on whether to accept a no-deal Brexit.

If MPs back a no-deal Brexit in this vote, then Britain will leave without a deal on March 29.

What happens if MPs reject no-deal?

If MPs also reject no-deal, a further vote is expected by Thursday on whether to extend Article 50 in order to delay the UK's departure beyond the current March 29 deadline.

This could see Mrs May ask the EU for a short delay, allowing more time for her to get support for her deal.

Another Commons vote would likely follow in the coming months.

Many at Westminster believe that in the event of the two extra votes going ahead, MPs would vote to delay Britain's departure - to the fury of Brexiteers.

Will there be a second referendum?

The Labour party had previously said it would either put forward an amendment calling for a second referendum or support a backbench one in the second Commons vote.

But the party retreated from its claims over the weekend.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said it was no longer the right time to vote on a second referendum, the Guardian reported.

He said Labour would instead back a delay to Brexit.
