A bride is suing American Airlines after her wedding dress was allegedly stained with red wine during a flight to Jamaica for her wedding ceremony.

Yewande Oteh, who now lives in Boston, has filed a $3.4m (£2.65m) lawsuit against American Airlines for the damage to her dress in August 2015. Oteh claims a flight attendant named Melanie Masters "egregiously" destroyed her wedding dress and that the airline failed to investigate the incident, The Independent reported.

Oteh was reportedly informed that she would be taking her wedding gown on the flight instead of checking it in. When the then 31-year-old boarded, Masters allegedly refused to let her hang her dress in the plane's closet.

Masters "aggressively" explained that the closet was off-limits to passengers, Oteh claims. The bride-to-be was asked to place her dress in an overhead bin in first class, even though she was flying economy.

Oteh alleges that she saw Masters and another flight attendant open the overhead bin where her dress was stored. "It was her (Oteh's) belief that the flight attendants were placing something in the bin and making fun of (Oteh) and her wedding gown," the lawsuit claims, according to Elle UK.

When Oteh disembarkedthe plane in Jamaica, Masters allegedly smirked and said: "Something must have spilled inside of the wedding bag."

Oteh and her fiancé opened the bag to find the wedding dress stained by red wine. The recent law school graduate said she "suffered severe diarrhoea, dehydration and depressive symptoms" after the flight.

"American Airlines and its personnel robbed all of us of this once-in-a-lifetime experience," Oteh's mother and attorney Yvette Sterling said.

Oteh is seeking $75,000 (£58,000) in damages for herself and four family members on the flight for "sustained and continued emotional and physical distress".

Masters denies Oteh's version of the events, The Independent reported. "It really didn't go like that at all," she said.

American Airlines said in a statement that they "are reviewing the lawsuit".
