Yahoo News Bridesmaids director Paul Feig reveals deleted moment in food poisoning scene that went ‘too far’
Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has reminisced on making the film to mark its 10th anniversary.
The acclaimed female-led comedy, which came out in 2011, starred Kristen Wiig as Annie, a jobless chef, who is asked by her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) to be her maid of honour.
It also featured Rose Byrne as Helen Harris III, Melissa McCarthy as Megan Price, Wendi McLendon-Covey as Rita, Ellie Kemper as Becca and Jessica St Clair as Whitney.
It was a major hit with critics, with The Independent’s Anthony Quinn writing: “Through a combination of smart performances and scurrilous gags, Bridesmaids yanks the buddy comedy from the hands of its traditional owners.”
One of its most outrageous scenes saw the bridesmaids get food poisoning after Annie takes them all to a cheap restaurant. At one point, Lilian soils herself in the street while wearing a wedding dress.
Revealing that the scene was almost even more gross than the version viewers eventually saw, Feig told Esquire: “There’s a deleted sequence where, after Becca throws up on Rita’s head, she has to throw up again, so she runs out of the bathroom and down the hall, thinking that there’s another bathroom at the end of the hallway.
“It turns out that the door opens onto Whitney’s office; she throws the door open and projectile vomits across this beautiful white office, and all over the wedding picture of Whitney and her husband.”
He added: “We shot a lot of outrageous stuff knowing that we could adjust the balance later. The minute we shot that sequence, we all said, ‘I think this is a bridge too far.’ So we scrapped that.”
