Brigid Kosgei, the fastest female marathon runner in history, will return to the streets of London on Sunday 4 October 2020 to defend her title at the first ever, elite-only London Marathon. Kosgei broke Paula Radcliffe’s 16-year female marathon record in the Chicago marathon last October, crossing the line in 2:14:04. Six-months earlier, the 25-year-old Kenyan runner won the London Marathon for the first time.

In a race like no other, the elite races for men, women and wheelchair athletes will take place in an enclosed looped course in St James's Park in London. There will be no spectators and athletes and their teams will have to undergo coronavirus tests before competing.

At present, the rest of the female field has not been announced, with only Brigid Kosgei and Manuela Schär confirmed to run. This is the only Abbott World Marathon Major taking place in the autumn of 2020 and World Athletics have now designated it an Olympic qualifying event.

After breaking Paula's record in 2019, Kosgei said 'I think 2:10 is possible for a lady. I am focused on reducing my time again.'

In January, Kosgei said, 'I am very much looking forward to returning to the Virgin Money London Marathon. Last year was an incredible year for me and it started by winning in London.'

Spectators will not be allowed to go and watch this year's race, but it will be broadcast on BBC Sport. The men's race will feature the anticipated showdown between Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele.
