Bristol girl dies on school trip to New York

A 17-year-old British girl has died on a school trip to New York.

The sixth form student from Bristol Grammar School was found unconscious and unresponsive at the hotel at which the group was staying on 19 December.

She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Her school said they were "devastated by the news and our thoughts are with their family and friends during this extremely difficult time".

Headmaster Jaideep Barot confirmed in a statement that pupils, parents and staff had been informed and promised the school was "providing support to all those who have been affected".

"We have opened a book of condolence and we will consider further remembrance with the family's support in the new year," he added.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are talking with the US authorities and are providing support to the family."

It is understood there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and that the girl may have fallen ill during the trip.
