Dependable Joe Foster is the most reliable worker in the land. He has never taken a day off in 65 years.

The amazing 81-year-old began by delivering parcels when he was 15 and reckons he has had 100 percent attendance ever since.

The dad of five and great-grandad – who is now a full-time train dispatcher – joined the army when he was a teenager, worked in electrical maintenance and then at the local council.

He has worked for Southeastern train operators for 31 years and is based at St Mary Cray, in Kent.

Every day he cycles to work, on time and in all weathers. And he has no plans to quit yet.

He said: “I absolutely love my job. Why would I ever want to do anything else?

“I remember my first day all those years ago and thinking how exciting it was.

“A lot has changed in that time but I still take as much pride and satisfaction in my job today.”

Joe lives with his wife, Rose, 77, who is a retired train carriage cleaner.

He is required to undergo a yearly medical for his job and says his healthy lifestyle helps him keep so fit.

Joe avoids high-cholesterol foods, and enjoys a Mediterranean diet with lots of fruit and vegetables.

He has two garlic cloves a day, two teaspoons of olive oil and a cod liver tablet for his bones.

Joe added: “It must be working as I have never taken a day off ill. More than 30 years on, I still go home feeling like I’ve done my best to help someone get from A to B. That’s why I’m still doing it now.

“I still love my job and will keep doing it for as long as possible. I have heard than many call me a living legend, which is lovely to hear and always makes me laugh.”

Southeastern run more than 2,000 trains into London from Kent and East Sussex daily, carrying more than 640, 000 passengers.

Commuter Nick Sharp, from Sevenoaks, Kent, said: “Joe always puts a smile on my face. He is a shining example that age is just a number. Having a laugh with Joe is the best part of my journey. He really is a living legend.”
