Pro-EU campaigners are saying that now would be the best time to start efforts to rejoin the European Union. They warn that the upcoming Donald Trump presidency would start a "trade war" to the detriment of Britain - and that the country should rebuild its ties with its nearest neighbours.

Have your say! Should Britain rejoin the EU? If you're pro-Brexit, what would the "tipping point" be for you to want to rejoin? Comment below, and join in on the conversation.

Incoming US president Donald Trump has made clear that he plans to use tarriffs - an additional tax on importing goods into a country - to protect American industry from cheap goods from abroad. He's made a rival of China, who would receive the harshest tarriffs, but a blanket 10% tarriff on the whole world has also been touted - and countries retaliating in kind may start a "trade war".

The US is Britain's largest trading partner by some distance, and with no free trade deal, would not be exempt from the charges. Campaigners think that we should move for closer ties with the EU as soon as possible to help to shield the country from rocky markets in the future.

This could take the form of rejoining the customs union, the single market, or rejoining the EU outright. There is also concern that the US will be less interested in supporting European nations against bad actors like Russia, so tighter ties may be the best way to ensure security on the continent.

A petition has been signed by over 10,000 people on the subject on the Parliament website, though it doesn't mention Trump. It reads: "I believe joining the EU would boost the economy, increase global influence, improve collaboration and provide stability & freedom. I believe that Brexit hasn't brought any tangible benefit and there is no future prospect of any, that the UK has changed its mind and that this should be recognised.

"I think the Single Market would bring inward investment, frictionless trade and economic growth benefiting industry and consumers alike.

"Full membership could also amplify the UK’s voice on the global stage, allowing it to influence EU policy and regulations, including trade, security and environment.

"Joining the EU could provide access to science & research projects and give UK citizens the right to live, work & study across member states, enhancing cultural exchange & personal opportunities."
