The London Stadium is set to stage multiple one-day athletics meetings next summer as UK Athletics officials bid to capitalise on the success of the World Championships in the capital.

A new event called The Meet will pit the UK against the United States over nine disciplines on July 21. While the format has not been finalised, it will feature a combination of running, relays, jumps and hurdles in a two-hour, TV-friendly format.

"We have a great sporting rivalry and look forward to seeing which nation comes out strongest," said Adam Gemili.

Chief executive of British Athletics Niels de Vos added: "This promises to be one of the biggest events in athletics in 2018."

The existing annual Diamond League meeting is likely to take place the following weekend, while it is understood that proposals have been drawn up to hold at least one other meeting during UKA’s two-month annual tenancy at the stadium.
