The Plaice To Beat! This Chippy Has Been Crowned The Best In Britain

Many consider it our national dish, so crowning the best fish and chip shop in Britain is obviously a serious business.

And following this year’s National Fish & Chip Awards, Britain’s best chippie has been revealed as Simpson’s Fish & Chip Shop, Cheltenham.

The family-run shop opened in 2009, and has already been a runner up for the same gong twice before.

Being crowned 2016’s Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year was an amazing moment for owners James and Bonny Ritchie, who’ve worked hard to make the shop a success.

James said: “We’ve just constantly tried to push the boundaries of what people expect from a fish and chip shop and I think that’s what made us win."

The shop keeps it simple, steering clear of MSG, salt and bulking agents in its batter, as well as offering a gluten-free frying day once a month.

The happy couple received their award at the Lancaster London Hotel on 20 January.

Dubbed the Oscars of the fish and chip trade, the National Fish and Chip Awards have been running for 28 years.

Second place this year went to Kingfisher Fish & Chips, Plympton, Plymouth, followed by the amazingly-named The Cod’s Scallops, Wollaton, Nottingham.
