After writing a series of successful children's books and seeing them adapted into Christmas specials, TV series, musicals and more, you'd think Britain's Got Talent judge David Walliams had seen his words come to life in every possible way.

But it turns out there is another, completely unexpected project in the works - Walliams' characters are getting a theme park of their very own at Alton Towers Resort from next year!

"Some exciting news. I have been working with @altontowers on a brand new ride inspired by my children's books which will open in 2020," David shared on Twitter today (October 17). "All will be revealed soon!"

Walliams began writing children’s books in 2008 and has since published 12 kids' novels (as well as short story collections and picture books), and was named the UK's biggest selling author for the second year running in 2018.

Among his most well-known titles are Gangsta Granny, Grandpa's Great Escape, The World's Worst Children, and its recent follow-up The World's Worst Teachers. All of these could now be brought to life at Alton Towers, alongside Fing, The Ice Monster, The Demon Dentist and Mr Stink.

"It's a huge thrill for some of my favourite characters to be getting their own attractions at Alton Towers," Walliams said in a statement.

"I can't wait to experience them for myself, and from all the work that has gone in I think people are going to love it. All will be revealed next year."

Of course, the project is shrouded in secrecy for now, but the resort's creative team has been working with Walliams and his publisher for two years to develop the attraction. Construction began earlier this year and the new theme park, centred around the existing Cloud Cuckoo Land area of the resort, is expected to open in Spring 2020.

"We are delighted to be able to announce our partnership with David Walliams on what promises to be a hugely exciting addition to Alton Towers Resort in 2020," said James Walker, the park's marketing director.

"David's books have really captured the imagination of Britain's children and their families. So it's a huge honour to be working with David on this fabulous collaboration for 2020, the year in which we celebrate our 40th birthday as the nation's favourite theme park."
