Britain's Got Talent judges challenge Strictly Come Dancing to feature same-sex couples
Britain’s Got Talent judges Amanda Holden and David Walliams made a same-sex contestants appeal to rival show Strictly Come Dancing, during filming of the newest series of the ITV talent show.
One act, male dancing partners David and Javier, really impressed the judges who were sharing the panel with regulars Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon. According to the Daily Mail, Amanda, 47, and David, 46, described the all-male salsa dancers as ‘beautiful’ during their audition.
Amanda quipped: ‘Strictly should do it. I love the moves and how you toss each other around on stage.’
David was also quick to praise the contestants, saying: It was beautiful and shows there’s nothing funny about two men dancing together. I don’t know why the BBC doesn’t have two men dancing together because it’s fantastic.’
Strictly judge judge Craig Revel-Horwood has previously suggested the idea of same-sex dance partners but was shut down when dance stars James and Ola Jordan slammed the idea, saying that the beauty and integrity of dancing relied on the ‘masculine and feminine aspects’.
Speaking to the Daily Star last year, they shared their thoughts on it. ‘Ballroom and Latin dance is about masculinity and femininity. It’s not about sexual orientation. It’s not a dating show. Why can’t a gay man dance with a woman?’
‘It’s actually insulting that you’re trying to change our profession with people saying same-sex couples should definitely be on there when it doesn’t need to be,’ James, 39, claimed.
Whether the BGT judges were simply trying to put pressure on their rival or start a discussion is unclear, but if same-sex couples were introduced at any point it’d no doubt be a divisive decision with its stars and audiences alike.
The latest BGT auditions have been ongoing since October, with the shows airing later this year, with a winner announced in time for a spot at the Royal Variety Performance. As usual, Ant and Dec will present the show and get involved in the usual behind-the-scenes frivolity.
The new series of Britain’s Got Talent will start on ITV this April.
