Britain's Prince Harry plans New Zealand visit in May

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Britain's Prince Harry is planning a weeklong visit to New Zealand next month that will include a stop on remote Stewart Island, population 378.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key on Monday announced the visit, which will be Harry's first to the South Pacific nation.

Harry plans to visit May 9 through May 16 and will also stop in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Whanganui and Linton.

Key didn't outline Harry's intended program, saying those details would be released once they had been confirmed. Key said the program would give the prince the opportunity to meet a wide range of New Zealanders from different communities.

Stewart Island is known for its natural beauty and abundance of native birds, including kiwi. Much of the island's 1,570 square kilometers (606 square miles) is unpopulated and is set aside as a national park.

Harry is currently in Australia on a monthlong embedment with the Australian army. Harry is the grandson of Britain's monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
