The hot weather enjoyed by Britain over the weekend will come to an abrupt halt in the coming days as temperatures plummet 10C.

Last Thursday, temperatures reached as high as 29C, and although the weekend was a little cooler, Sunday was still hot enough to see the warmest London Marathon in history, with highs of 23.5C.

However, the Met Office is warning that things will cool down considerably as this week progresses.

Cold air from the north of the UK around Iceland is going to bring lower temperatures right through to next weekend.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst told the Mail Online: “After a warm Sunday for the Marathon, there’s a big change ahead, with much cooler temperatures and rain or showers.

“Showers could be wintry from Tuesday over Scottish mountains, with hail in showers in other parts.

“Patchy grass frost is possible in the North from midweek, with 2C lows in Scotland and colder air possibly following.

“But at least most people are used to the cool weather after the cold March and start to April.”

On Thursday, a temperature of 29.1C was recorded at St James’s Park in London, making it the hottest April day in the UK for almost 70 years.

The average maximum temperature for April is 11.9C.

The highest ever temperature for the UK in April was also recorded in London – 29.4C in 1949.
