A four-year-old British boy has drowned in a swimming pool in Tenerife.

The youngster died at a four-star hotel in the resort of Los Cristianos, called Paradise Park, after the alarm was raised at 3.40pm yesterday afternoon (WED).

Efforts to revive him by members of an emergency response team proved unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A receptionist at the declined to comment. However, a spokesman for a local government-run emergency response coordination centre confirmed a four-year-old boy had died at the hotel "after suffering from a possible cardiac arrest following a drowning incident".

It is not immediately clear why the tragedy had happened.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "Our consular staff are supporting the family of a British child who died in Tenerife and are in contact with Spanish authorities.”

The hotel, popular with British holidaymakers, has five swimming pools and four hot tubs.
