British Gas boiler warning sent to millions of households
Millions of households potentially risk having issues with their boilers because they aren't aware how to recognise when they have problems and don't know how to fix them. A British Gas survey of homes found around half didn't know how to check the health of their boilers.
More than a third of the 2,000 asked said they never think about the condition of their boilers and tend to leave them until they have to respond to any problems. It could mean households are forking out cash on repairs they could have otherwise avoided had they checked their boilers and kept them in better health.
Many people said they would not feel confident about checking their boiler or trying to fix any issues themselves and would much rather bring in an expert and deal with the costs involved. Responding to the findings, British Gas experts said: "It is obvious from the survey that there are some confidence and knowledge gaps across the country when it comes to boilers. Almost half (49.8%) of survey respondents admitted they don't know how to check the health of their boiler.

"With 50% of people not understanding how to check their boiler’s health, it can feel puzzling sometimes. If you’re one of those people who aren’t too sure, you can do simple things like turning the heating on and checking radiators to ensure the system is working properly – especially if it hasn’t been turned on recently.
"Bleeding your radiators is another simple task you could carry out to ensure your home heating system is functioning as it should. If your radiators are cold at the top and hot at the bottom, this could be something to try. To do this, turn off your heating, let your radiators go cold and then bleed them with a bleed key and cloth."
