An energy expert says one easy thing can slash £700 off your bills. Experts at Alan Boswell Group say simple tips could help you to save some money this winter, with good insulation reducing heating needs and saving £630 to £730.

The experts at Alan Boswell Group said in a message to British Gas, EDF, EON, Ovo and Octopus customers: "On a budget? Start with low-cost, high-impact upgrades like loft insulation (from £300) or draught-proofing with weatherstripping or caulk.

"Adding thick curtains, blinds, or carpets and rugs can also reduce heat loss." The energy gurus went on, adding: "Available until March 2025, the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) can cover up to 60% of insulation costs for eligible households."

The Labour Party government has been helping the least energy efficient households become more energy efficient by funding home improvement measures, such as insulation and boiler upgrades, Money Saving Expert has said.

MSE, the site founded by Martin Lewis, points out there are two schemes – the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, designed for those on a low income, and the Great British Insulation Scheme which is open to a further 400,000 households.

The Energy Saving trust advises: "There are many simple yet effective ways to insulate your home, which can significantly reduce heat loss while lowering your heating bills. Even little fixes around the home can mount up to significant savings in your energy bills. For example, fitting your hot water cylinder with an insulating jacket will save you £40 a year in Great Britain (GB) and £45 in Northern Ireland (NI) in heating costs. You’ll also lower your annual carbon emissions by 160kg in GB and 230kg in NI.

"Whether you are looking for quick wins around your home or a professional to install insulation, the suggestions below will help maintain a constant temperature in your home."
