British Gas, EDF, EON, Ovo and Octopus customers have been urged to "change their daily habit" which is driving up bills. Customers have been urged to implement changes in the wake of Christmas as the energy price cap continues to be sky-high.

Jane Hawkes, one the UK’s leading consumer experts UK’s leading consumer experts, says to save money on bills, calculate, monitor and reduce your energy usage. Ms Hawkes told GB News: "You can’t make real changes to your energy usage to save money unless you know how much your electrical appliances cost to run.

"Consider the most cost effective options for cooking and doing laundry. Energy Monitoring Apps such as Energy Cost Calculator enable you to get an overview of your daily, weekly and monthly usage. The calculator is available for both Android and iOS systems."

Other ways include investing in smart meters, thermostats and plugs, as well as switching off vampire devices which drain power when on standby or when not in use. Households who change daily routines - like running the washing machine at 30C and avoiding using the tumble dryer - can also benefit.

Other changes could be not overfilling the kettle, reducing the time you light rooms, using the dishwasher less or only half-loading it, and cutting the time you shower. EDF is encouraging people to monitor their energy usage by installing a smart meter, utilising its Energy Hub for a personalised view of their usage, and checking if they are eligible for The Great British Insulation Schemes.

Philippe Commaret added: “At a time when bills are expected to stay above where they were before the energy crisis, we’re committed to supporting our customers by helping them to identify which energy-saving measures will make a real difference to their bills, and help the nation to achieve Net Zero.”
