British Gas, Octopus, Eon, EDF and OVO customers to get payments worth up to £2,000
Households across the country could be in line for special cash grants to help them cope with their energy bills. Emergency payments of up to £2,000 are being issued to people who are struggling to afford gas and electricity or have fallen into debt.
The British Gas Energy Trust is making payments to both British Gas and non-British Gas customers. It comes as energy prices went up again in January, while Winter Fuel Payments have been removed from millions of pensioners this year, leaving many more struggling to pay their bills.
The trust offers grants to people who have fallen behind with bills to give them a "fresh start". Over 64,000 households received support last year. People also receive debt advice and usually need to show they will be able to keep up with bills in order to get awarded the emergency grants.

Bosses said without the help, many people faced disconnection or self-rationing, leaving them vulnerable during the colder months. It comes as Britain has been gripped by a cold snap over the last week, bringing sub-zero temperatures.
People can find out more or apply for support here. Jessica Taplin, CEO of the British Gas Energy Trust, said: "The first step for anyone struggling with their energy bills is to reach out to their energy supplier. Once this step has been taken, it’s also a good idea to check your eligibility for external support. The Trust’s support funds are there to help individuals with energy debt and we encourage every household to apply if they qualify, and to share this information with friends and family, as no one should have to navigate these challenging times alone."
