British Gas, Octopus, Eon, EDF and OVO customers are being told to switch their washing machine on at a certain time to slash their bills. Households across the UK could make savings on their energy bills by changing their laundry routines.

According to Gordon Wallis, energy expert at fuel supply and fuel distribution business Your NRG, the time of the day you use your washing machine can impact your bills. But you could save some cash over the course of a year if you wash your clothes during off-peak hours.

Washing at cooler temperatures can also help save money, he said. Mr Wallis said: "Many people are unaware that the time of day they use their washing machine can have a significant impact on their energy bills.

"For those on time-of-use tariffs, electricity providers often charge less during off-peak hours, such as late at night or early morning. By adjusting your routine and doing your laundry during these cheaper periods, you could see decent savings over the course of a year.

"In winter, energy demand tends to peak in the morning as households heat their homes and begin their day. This increased demand can result in higher rates during those hours.

"Running your washing machine in the evening or overnight, when demand is lower, is not only more cost-effective but also supports a more balanced use of the electricity grid. Small changes like these can make a noticeable difference over the winter months."

Switching to cold washing cycles can cut your energy usage. Mr Wallis said: "Washing machines and tumble dryers are some of the most energy-hungry appliances at home, but small changes can make a big difference.

"Switching to cold washes can cut energy use by up to 90 per cent without sacrificing cleanliness. Running full loads instead of smaller ones boosts efficiency, while keeping your dryer's filter clean improves performance, shortens drying times, and saves energy."

He added: "Energy efficiency isn’t just about reducing bills – it’s also about protecting the environment. Washing at lower temperatures, using off-peak energy, and maintaining your appliances are small steps that collectively help reduce the strain on the electricity grid and lower carbon emissions.

"These actions, when adopted by many, can have a really positive environmental impact."
