The Energy Saving Trust has shared ten new 'simple' tips to slash bills by up to £390 this winter. British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON Next and Octopus customers could be handed £390 each by introducing simple and small changes around the home.

Joanna O’Loan, knowledge manager at Energy Saving Trust said: “It can be daunting going into the colder months when energy bills are generally at their highest. We want to reassure everyone that there are simple adjustments you can make at home to help lower your energy costs and reduce carbon emissions this winter.”

A chimney draught excluder added to any open chimney can save £55. Topping up the hot water cylinder insulation from 25mm to 80mm can save £40. On heating controls, Ms O’Loan said: “If you don’t have a programmer, room thermostat or thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), then fitting them and using them correctly could save you around £110 on your annual energy bills. If you already have a programmer and thermostat, install TRVs for a saving of around £35.”

She also advised households to switch off zombie appliances which are guzzling your energy and racking up more money to bills. Taking appliances around the home off standby and switching them off can save £45 a year, according to EST.

Turning off lights in rooms that aren’t in use can save £7. In the kitchen, running a cooler wash can save £12, only running a full dishwasher can save £12, and using the right amount of water in the kittle could pocket you £29.
