British Gas has told certain customers they could save hundreds of pounds through a special energy tariff. The special account is available for households who own electric vehicles (EV).

It allows drivers to potentially make big savings on electric they use to charge their cars. It comes as the number of people owning electric cars will surge over the coming years.

British Gas has shared details of the tariff which it says will help electric car owners reduce their running costs. It said it was making it easier for drivers to charge cars at home rather than using often costly public chargers.

Paul Lodwidge, head of energy product and propositions at British Gas, said: "Switching to an EV tariff is one of the most efficient things you can do to lower running costs as an EV owner. With the growing number of electric vehicles on the roads, keeping on top of the best charging tariff will help EV owners save and improve their carbon footprint.

"Public chargers aren’t always convenient, so we’ve made it easier and cheaper for drivers to charge at home. This change can you save hundreds – and sometimes even thousands – compared to a standard tariff or a public charger.

“Make sure to look into tariffs that have the option of on-peak and off-peak hours, so that you can use low times to make the most of your energy. If you’re choosing to charge your car at night (which will help your bills in the long run) you’ll see a significant improvement in the affordability of your driving.

“It's worth noting that EV tariffs might not offer the best value for everyone - for example if you don’t charge much at home, need to regularly charge your car during peak hours or you have other particularly power-hungry devices at home that you use in the day.

“But, for most people, really, there are not many disadvantages to switching to an EV tariff."
