Two British girls, one a baby, have been rescued after being discovered "abandoned" in a car on the sun-drenched island of Tenerife.

Local police in Arona reported that the children were found in Las Galletas, Tenerife, when a 34-year-old local resident spotted a white Volkswagen Polo rental car parked in direct sunlight close to where searches are ongoing for missing British teen Jay Slater.

The concerned passer-by noticed two young girls trapped inside the vehicle with its windows shut, reports the Liverpool Echo. According to the police, the seven-year-old girl informed them that their father had left them there while he went for a haircut at a nearby shopping centre, but despite being able to, the girls refused to leave the car.

After the woman alerted emergency services, officers arrived and attempted to locate the father in the shopping centre using documents found in the car, which also contained a bag of yoghurts and juices, after the girls allowed them access, reports the Daily Star.

A man aged 38 was later questioned but initially denied any relation to the children. Subsequently, the girls were moved to the Nuestra Senora de la Paz Maternal Centre in La Laguna by order of the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office. The same man later admitted to owning the car before absconding from the centre.

The shopping centre was just an hour away from the Jay Slater search site. Another man, believed to be a 35-year-old from Poland, later turned up claiming to be a friend of the girls' father.

Following a police investigation, a 27-year-old British woman was confirmed as the mother of the girls and they were handed over to her. The 38-year-old is still on the run with a warrant out for his arrest.
