A 39-year-old British man has been killed and a 32-year-old injured following a suspected deliberate hit-and-run in Cyprus.

Cyprus Police said the two men were struck by a car as they walked along a road near Paphos at about 2.30am on Sunday, with the older man pronounced dead at the scene.

He has been named locally as Charlie Birch from Powys, Wales.

The second man was taken to hospital in Paphos with non life-threatening injuries, police added.

The car was later found by police after being dumped in the sea.

The force said two people, a 35-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, were facing charges of premeditated murder. A Paphos court on Sunday extended their detention for eight days

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are offering advice and support to the family of a British man following his death in Cyprus, and are in contact with the Cypriot authorities."

According to local media reports, the two suspects and the tourists were involved in an argument at a pub in Peyia earlier in the evening.
