British woman dies of a blood clot after breast augmentation

It was revealed this week that a pulmonary embolism — in which a blood clot blocks arteries in the lungs — caused the death in July of a British woman who had undergone a cosmetic procedure just weeks before.

Beautician Louise Harvey, 36, died 17 days after having breast augmentation surgery, The Sun reports. Coroner Yvonne Blake said Harvey, complaining of breathing problems, collapsed at her home in Norwich, England.

The BBC reports that she was a patient of Transform Cosmetic Surgery. The clinic told the BBC in a statement that it’s “deeply saddened” by Harvey’s death and has undertaken a full investigation, which it shared with the coroner.

A JustGiving fundraising page was launched earlier this month to support Harvey’s three children: Kayleigh-anne, 18; Owen, 11; and Jaxon, 6.

Mark Hutson, a family friend who set up the fundraising effort, wrote on JustGiving that Harvey was a “beautiful, young devoted mother of three. … We only wish to provide them with the love and support that they need now and for the future.”

Dr. Naveen Cavale, a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, told The Sun that side effects from breast augmentation surgery are rare. He added that most effects come from anesthesia and surgery, rather than the implants themselves.
