A British teenager has reportedly died after falling from a cliff at a popular whale-watching area in Australia.

Emergency services were called to Cape Solander in Sydney at 3.30pm on Monday after reports that a man had fallen around 10 metres, NSW Police said.

Marine Area Command officers attended and pulled the unconscious man from the water.

A rescue helicopter was sent to the scene along with five ambulances.

NSW Ambulance paramedics tried to revive the man at the scene but he couldn’t be saved.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the man was from the UK but had not been named while police contacted his relatives. They also claimed he fell while trying to take a selfie.

Chief Inspector Chris Hill said at the scene that early investigations suggested it was a case of misadventure.

“It would appear at this time he was here with a group of friends to go whale watching,” he said. “They’ve made their way down to the rock platform … He’s slipped and fallen over the edge and unfortunately died.”

Kurnell, at the southern headland of Kamay Botany Bay National Park is a popular spot for whale-watching.

Initial investigations suggest there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s fall.

Officers from the Sutherland Shire Police Area Command will prepare a report for the Coroner.
