A British woman missing in the Himalayas for more than three days has been rescued along with her companion.

Fay Manners, 37, and her American friend Michelle Dvorak, 31, had been unaccounted for since Thursday while trekking up India's Chaukhamba mountain.

The pair became stranded at an altitude of more than 6,000m, according to Indian News Agency IANS.

They were successfully rescued on Sunday morning after an 80-hour search conducted by the air force, army and local operatives.

They sent an urgent message back to base camp to say they were in trouble having lost their climbing equipment, tend and food down a gorge.

An unsuccessful search operation had earlier been put on hold due to harsh weather conditions.

Ms Manners left her Bedford home to move to the Alps to pursue her passion for climbing and is a brand ambassador for The North Face and Petzl.

She recently charted an adventure across the Alps where she would climb and then ski down before cycling to another range.

On Sunday morning she shared a message on an Instagram story which read, “We’re back down and safe.”

Ms Dvorak is a PhD student in climate science.
