Britney Spears has tragically announced the "devastating" miscarriage of her "miracle baby" with partner Sam Asghari.

Revealing last month via social media that the couple were expecting their first child together, Spears said it came as a surprise to her whilst on holiday on the Hawaiian island of Maiu as she thought she had just indulged in a little too much food.

However, yesterday (May 14), Spears made the heartbreaking announcement in a joint post with Asghari shared to Instagram to express their sadness over the miscarriage, but also hope that they may be able to expand their family in the future.

"It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that we have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy. This is a devastating time for any parent. Perhaps we should have waited to announce until we were further along, however we were overly excited to share the good news. Our love for each other is our strength. We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family. We are grateful for all of your support. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult moment."

Reiterating their hope for the future, Asghari commented on the post with: "We will have a miracle soon".

After meeting on the set of a music video in 2016, Spears and Asghari announced their engagement in September last year, before hinting that they may have married earlier this year – Spears has referred to Asghari as her husband in multiple social media posts, though no official announcement has been made.

Spears has two children from her previous relationship with Kevin Federline, whilst this was Asghari's first experience of fatherhood, which he previously said he was "looking forward to" on social media.

"Marriage and kids are a natural part of a strong relationship filled with love and respect. Fatherhood is something I have always looked forward to and I don't take lightly. It is the most important job I will ever do."
