Britney Spears’ father breaks silence on #FreeBritney and the popstar’s conservatorship

Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, has responded to fans who started the #FreeBritney movement on social media, which called for an end to his daughter’s conservatorship.

“All these conspiracy theorists don’t know anything. The world don’t have a clue,” Jamie told Page Six. “It’s up to the court of California to decide what’s best for my daughter. It’s no one else’s business.”

Britney’s conservatorship was enacted in 2008, following the singer’s public breakdown, with Jamie serving as his daughter’s conservator (due to personal health reasons, he briefly stepped down in 2019, but resumed his duties as conservator earlier in 2020).

Under the conservatorship, Britney is unable to make decisions regarding her finances, career, estate and health. As the 38-year-old’s conservatorship is set to be reevaluated in court later this month on August 22, fans have created the hashtag #FreeBritney to draw attention to her case on social media.

Though they do not have intimate knowledge of Britney’s conservatorship or the state of her mental health, many fans have pointed to the multiple world tours and four-year Vegas residency that Britney completed during the conservatorship as proof she is capable of making her own decisions. Other fans have also alleged that Britney’s father and business manager have been stealing from her estate.

“I have to report every nickel and dime spent to the court every year,” Jamie said in response to those accusations. “How the hell would I steal something?”

Jamie also noted that some of the #FreeBritney supporters - some of whom have taken to protesting outside of the courthouse - were particularly aggressive. “People are being stalked and targeted with death threats,” he said. “It’s horrible. We don’t want those kinds of fans,” he added.

“I love my daughter. I love all my kids, but this is our business. It’s private,” Jamie said.

Yet Britney’s father isn’t the first family member to publicly address the latest controversy surrounding her conservatorship. Last month, Britney’s mother, Lynne, filed legal documents requesting involvement in her daughter’s finances.

Britney’s younger sister, Jamie Lynn, also responded to an Instagram comment requesting her to speak out about the singer’s mental health. “You have no right to assume anything about my sister, and I have NO right to speak about HER health and personal matters,” she replied.

And Britney’s older brother, Bryan, addressed the conservatorship while speaking on a podcast in July, saying that while “It’s been a great thing for our family to this point...how it proceeds from here, I don’t know."
