Britney Spears asks judge to end father's control over her personal affairs

Britney Spears's lawyer has officially asked a judge to end her father's control over her personal life.

The 39-year-old singer has been under a court-ordered conservatorship since 2008 following a public breakdown.

Her father Jamie was in control of her financial and personal affairs before stepping down from the latter role in September 2019 because of health reasons.

Care professional Jodi Montgomery has replaced him on a temporary basis, and Spears has now officially said she wants her to be made a permanent conservator.

Papers have been filed by her lawyer Samuel D Ingham II that show that as well as requesting Montgomery be made permanent, Spears has asked her father to resign from his role overseeing her personal life.

The legal documents also state Spears wants to be able to bring the conservatorship to a complete end if necessary.

The papers say: “Petitioner expressly reserves the right to petition for termination of this conservatorship under Probate Code section 1861.

“Nothing in the within petition shall be deemed to constitute a waiver of that right.”

The documents reveal that Montgomery's duties include the power to “restrict and limit” visitors – apart from Ingham – to Spears, the ability to retain “caretakers and security guards”, and powers to prosecute civil harassment restraining orders on the star’s behalf.

Montgomery would also be able to speak with medical professionals about Spears and access her medical records.

Spears' father remains the co-conservator of her estate, estimated at $60m (£43.8m), alongside private wealth management firm Bessemer Trust.

She has previously pleaded for him to be removed from the role.

Spears's fans have protested against the arrangement, which was brought to further attention with the Framing Britney Spears documentary released earlier this year.

The next hearing in the case is set to take place next month.
