Britney Spears has said that her conservatorship left her scared of people and showbiz.

The star, 40, had been under the legal arrangement for 13 years in which her father, Jamie Spears, controlled many aspects of her personal and financial life.

A judge released her from the conservatorship last month.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, the ‘Toxic’ singer told fans she had “given up hope” because of it.

She said: “So much wasted time to only embarrass me and humiliate me and I guess it seems odd to most people that I don’t even do my music anymore … that’s just the surface issues.

“People have no idea the awful things that were done to me personally.

“And after what I’ve been through I’m scared of people and the business! They really hurt me!”

Despite hinting earlier this month at potential new music, the popstar spoke candidly about why she felt unable to perform music in a hiatus.

“Not doing my music anymore is my way of saying ‘F**k you’ in a sense,” she said.

Now the singer says her goal for 2021 is to “push myself a bit more and do things that scare me but not too much”.

She added: “Honestly my family embarrassed me and hurt me so deeply … so tooting my own horn and seeing my past accomplishments reflecting back at me actually helped”.

Her conservatorship began in 2008, with the star’s family arguing it was necessary to protect her.

Fans had started a campaign to release her from the deal, under the slogan ‘Free Britney’.
