British tourists in France will be banned from attractions and cafes if they can't prove double vaccination

Visitors present their health pass (pass sanitaire) to an official at the entrance to The Gaumont Multiplex Odyséum Cinema in Montpellier, southern France on July 29, 2021. - France will from August 9, enforce new legislation that will make a health pass compulsory to visit a cafe, board a plane or travel on an inter-city train, the government's spokesman said July 28. The legislation passed by parliament at the weekend has sparked mass protests in France but the government is determined to press ahead and make the health pass a key part of the fight against Covid-19. A valid health pass is generated by two jabs from a recognised vaccine, a negative coronavirus test or a recent recovery from infection. The legislation also makes vaccination compulsory for health-workers and carers. The pass has already been obligatory from July 21, for visits to museums, cinemas and cultural venues with a capacity of more than 50 people. British tourists in France must now show proof of having two coronavirus vaccines before entering attractions, cafes and restaurants.

France’s controversial health pass app requires visitors to bars and other venues to prove their COVID-19 vaccine status from Monday.

If Britons are unable to prove they have had two coronavirus jabs, they face being banned from landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, as well as outdoor cafes.

Thousands of people took to the streets of a number of French cities at the weekend in protest at the new health pass.

While such COVID-19 passports have been used in other European countries, France’s is particularly far-reaching.

People must now show the pass to eat in a restaurant, access hospital treatment or travel on a train.

It has already been needed to access swimming pools, museums and nightclubs since 21 July.

Fines for those who refuse to show the pass start from £115 but can rise to as much as £3,200 for repeat offences.

The UK government has advised that English and Welsh tourists must upload a QR code from the NHS proving their vaccine status to France’s official “TousAntiCovid” app.

Information on proof of certification for those vaccinated in Northern Ireland and Scotland is not yet available, the government said.

However, it is estimated that between 8% and 16% of Britons do not own a smartphone, which could leave some tourists without the required vaccine proof to access cafes and attractions.

Yahoo News UK has contacted the French Embassy in the UK to ask for clarification on what visitors without a smartphone should do.

The number of Britons travelling to France is expected to increase after the country was added to the UK’s amber list on Sunday.

This means fully vaccinated travellers returning to the UK from France no longer need to quarantine.

French officials insisted they have ironed out issues that meant the app was incompatible with NHS proof of vaccination.

There had been reports that the NHS QR code could not be scanned by the TousAntiCovid app, meaning Britons had to present their NHS app or certificate at venues that already required the health pass for entry.

However, some British tourists said they had been turned away from swimming pools and other venues because they didn’t have their documentation within the French health pass app.

On Wednesday, the French government insisted any issues would be ironed out in time for the change in rules.

Addressing the issue for British residents not living in England and Wales, Catherine Colonna, the French ambassador to the UK, said last week: “For England and Wales, interoperability of the QR codes. For Scotland, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar, see practical details on the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs’ website."

More details can be found on the French consulate site.

Paris, Nice, Montpellier and other cities and towns across France have been beset by protests against the introduction of the health pass.

Vaccination rates jumped after French president Emmanuel Macron unveiled the health pass plans last month. Two-thirds of all French people have now received one dose and 55% are fully vaccinated.

But in the northern town of Cambrai, nearly every restaurant and cafe closed their doors on Saturday to protest against the health pass requirements.

"We're not against the vaccine. We're against having to run checks on our patrons," said bar manager Laurent Zannier.
