Brits could have this rare 50p worth £300 in their wallets - what to look for
Brits are being encouraged to rummage through their wallets for a rare coin that could be worth hundreds. A special edition 50p piece from 2009 is fetching up to £300, according to a coin specialist.
On the popular social media platform TikTok, the Coin Collector UK highlighted that a particular 50p coin commemorating the 2012 London Olympics is in high demand among numismatists. It's crucial, however, to distinguish it from the more common 2011 version, which typically sells for just £2.
"This Olympic 50p coin can be worth £300," he informed his audience. "There are two different versions of this coin and one is worth much more than the other. If you find one with the date 2009 on the back of the coin, then this is the expensive version worth around £300 pounds."

This coveted coin bears the design of a high jumper, a creation by Florence Jackson, an eight-year-old from Bristol, who won a Blue Peter competition with her artwork. The Coin Collector added: "Less than 20,000 of these were made as part of a Blue Peter competition and they were put into special cards like this. Although it was not minted for circulation there is a very small chance you may find one in your change if someone has broken it out of the pack and spent it."
"The regular 2011 one that's in this video, unfortunately doesn't go for this large sum with over two million of these made - it is still worth keeping and worth about two pounds. He added: ".
He further advised: "But remember, it's the year 2009 that you want to be checking for, which is worth the big money. Always keep any Olympics if you find them."
