Brits are expected to spend a record £2.44bn on November 23 as Black Friday marks the biggest shopping day of the year.

According to the Centre for Retail Research and VoucherCodes, UK shoppers will spend an average of £2.95m per minute on everything from cosmetics to cut price TVs.

This year, some of the high street’s biggest retailers including Argos, Amazon and Currys PC World have upped the ante by offering more deals online earlier than usual.

The figures show how the nation is expected to increase its Black Friday spending online by 196 per cent on 2013 to £1.04bn online.

However, the study also reveals that more Brits will be hitting the high streets to snap up the best offers and are predicted to splash out £1.41bn offline.

Jimmy New, Director of Marketing at VoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “Black Friday is now well established as one of the prime pre-Christmas discount shopping days with millions being spent and made in minutes, both on and offline.

“This year, many shoppers are actively planning ahead for the day in order to avoid fighting it out with fellow shoppers and to make the most of the deals on offer. From saving up to making lists, the number one rule is to be prepared - and it’s always a good idea to see if you can stretch your money even further by using a discount code or voucher.”
