I broke my leg playing for Liverpool - but didn't realise until the next day
Jamie Carragher has revealed how he was unaware he broke his leg while playing for Liverpool until the following day. The Reds legend made 737 appearances during his career at Anfield before retiring in 2013.
Since calling time on his playing career, Carragher has formed a career as one of the main figures in the Sky Sports punditry team for the Premier League, alongside former Manchester United captain Gary Neville. Carragher is currently second on the list of all-time appearances for Liverpool, behind only fellow club legend Ian Callaghan.
It was during the 2004/04 season that Carragher suffered a broken leg in the Premier League against Blackburn Rovers. The Reds won the game 3-1 at Ewood Park, with Carragher forced to be substituted due to the injury - but the former Liverpool centre-back has admitted he was unaware of the severity of the injury until nearly 24 hours later.

“I’ve never pulled a muscle in my life, so I was never out for two weeks – if I got injured, it was a big one. I broke my leg in 2003, that was my first big injury," said Carragher on The Overlap for Sky Sports.
"Lucas Neil did that at Blackburn - I was playing left-back, and whoever was in front of me played a ball short, so it enticed him [Neil]. It was 50/50.
"I can take pain on the football pitch, but I knew it was something. I stood up, and I could feel something. It’s got to be bad for me to come off. I stood up and tried to put weight on my leg and walk a bit.
“Sammy Lee, the physio comes on. I don’t get a stretcher – I limp off to the side of the pitch. I go to the treatment room, but 10 minutes before me, Milan Baros broke his leg. I had the Blackburn doctor instead.
"I’m in there with him, and Lucas Neil came in – he had been sent off. Then my dad comes flying in – he comes out the away end and knows it must be something bad if I’ve gone off. I don’t know what I’ve done – it’s killing me and throbbing.
“I get on the coach home, obviously our doctor still isn’t there. We won the game 3-1, and I go to bed that night – my leg is throbbing.
"I wake up in the morning, still don’t know I’ve broken my leg, and then a doctor sees me for the first time. After 30 seconds, he said ‘You’ve got to go to the hospital – you’ve broken your leg'."
