Brooks Back At News UK As Sun Gets New Editor

Rebekah Brooks is to return to her job running News Corporation's British newspaper arm after being cleared of involvement in the phone hacking scandal.

The company said she would resume her role as News UK chief executive from Monday, four years after she stood down from the role at News International following the closure of the News of the World.

She was cleared of all criminal charges relating to phone hacking in a trial that ended just over a year ago and will replace Mike Darcey, who has led News UK for three years.

It was also confirmed that Tony Gallagher would become editor-in-chief of The Sun newspaper as part of a wider shake-up that will see David Dinsmore become chief operating officer.

Robert Thomson, News Corp's chief executive, said of Ms Brooks: "Her expertise, excellence and leadership will be crucial as we work to extend our relationship with readers and advertisers, and develop our digital platforms to take full advantage of our brilliant journalism."

He added that her role had been expanded to include the acquisition and development of digital properties.

Ms Brooks said of her appointment: "I am delighted to return to News UK. It is a privilege to be back amongst the most talented journalists and executives in the business.

"I am confident that we can meet the many challenges of this digital age with a combination of cutting edge technologies and world class journalism."

News UK is the publisher of The Sun, The Times and Sunday Times newspapers.

Before her role at the top of News International, Ms Brooks was editor of The Sun and the News of the World before that.

She started her career at the now defunct Sunday title as a feature writer.
