Marcus Rashford’s brother was beaten up and robbed at gunpoint barely 24 hours before the Manchester United forward scored the winning goal at Wembley yesterday.

The brother of Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Liverpool defender, was also attacked in the incident at a Caribbean restaurant in Manchester on Saturday.

The Telegraph understands that Dane Rashford and Tyler Alexander-Arnold, both of whom act as their sibling’s agent, were shaken by the assault but were released from hospital with no serious injuries. Marcus Rashford was informed of the robbery before playing a key role in United’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Alexander-Arnold, who like Rashford is an England international, played all of Premier League leaders Liverpool’s match at the Amex Stadium.

Their brothers were eating breakfast at a Caribbean restaurant when the incident happened, with the assailants robbing Dane of his watch and taking Tyler’s wallet and the keys to his Range Rover. A third unnamed friend of the pair was also attacked and robbed at the Little Rock restaurant.

Police were told that the gang carried a shotgun, machete and baseball bat, and turned up to the restaurant in a white BMW 3 series.

The three victims were on their way to the south coast to watch Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Brighton on Saturday evening.

Officers were said to be examining whether the attackers trailed the victim’s cars through the Moss Side area of the city on Saturday morning.

The Range Rover was later found by police in nearby Fallowfield.

Six people, aged 18, 19, 23 and 58, were arrested for questioning in connection with the incident. Two 17-year-olds were also held on suspicion of robbery.

Dane’s girlfriend, Lauryn Goodman, posted on Instagram on Saturday, saying: “Today was a reality check, the world can be so cruel.”
