'Budget' European city break boasts stunning beaches and food – and flights start at £44
As the British summer draws to a close and cooler weather sets in, many of us are dreaming of one last week of sunshine. If you're looking to escape the relentless rain, Greece is a popular choice for people in the UK due to its short flight time, delicious cuisine and warm climate.
In September, temperatures hover around 28C, dropping to a comfortable 23C in October. While the beautiful Greek islands like Santorini and Rhodes are often the go-to destinations, they can be pricey and crowded with tourists, even during the off-peak season.
The mainland, on the other hand, offers stunning landscapes and coastal gems, and can be a more affordable option. Travel lover Em, who has visited 10 countries this year spending only £2,000 - or £200 per trip - took to TikTok to share her travel tips.
She particularly recommended Athens, especially the southern neighbourhoods such as Glyfada, for an inexpensive city break. "This area has a beautiful beach and lovely cafes but also great transport links to the centre, with a direct metro or tram," she said, reports the Express.
Em suggested visiting the 'main tourist attractions' like the famous Acropolis but also highlighted free spots like the Athens National Garden and Mount Lycabettus to help keep holiday costs down.
She added: "Unless you're going to fancy restaurants, you can still find really affordable food in Athens, particularly the local Greek food like souvlaki which is delicious.
"You can also take a day trip from Athens to one of the nearby islands. I would recommend Aehona which is also known as the island of pistachios. It's less than an hour on the ferry and it's a lovely way to experience the Greek island culture without spending as much as you probably would on Mykonos or Santorini."
You can fly directly from the UK to Athens from many major airports including Luton, Stansted, and London Gatwick. Flights are available for less than £50.
