In the sixteenth episode of season five, Buffy Summers came home to find her mother dead in the living room. Each character was devastated upon hearing the news, but Anya's response was perhaps the most heartbreaking of all.
"But I don't understand!" she cried. "I don't understand how this all happens. How we go through this."
"I mean, I knew her," Anya continued. "And then she's, there's just a body, and I don't understand why she just can't get back in it and not be dead anymore! It's stupid! It's mortal and stupid!
"And Xander's crying and not talking, and I was having fruit punch, and I thought, well Joyce will never have any more fruit punch, ever, and she'll never have eggs, or yawn or brush her hair, not ever, and no one will explain to me why," said Anya.
"I don’t want to burst your bubble, but I just had to go to the bathroom. That was all I was thinking about the entire time I was shooting that – just how full my bladder was. I was so uncomfortable."
"We were supposed to break for lunch," Caulfield continued. "And Joss [Whedon] wasn’t happy. He just wanted something super-specific. It had to do with a certain tear coming out of an eye. And there were too many tears and not enough tears."
"It was a very technical thing that he was after – with a full bladder, and we were on a meal penalty, and everyone’s really hungry."
"It was just like, 'Why?!'" Caulfield asked herself.
"And that was it. And he’s like, 'Great. We’re on lunch.'"
"It's just pure coincidence that the animal in that was a rabbit," she explained. "As far as I know, there was absolutely no intended Easter egg with that. That had nothing to do with me.
"And I didn't even clock it until someone posted that online. I saw that and was like, 'Oh my God, that's right. That's random.'
"[WandaVision creator] Jac Schaeffer's my friend. I think she would have said something like, 'And by the way, we're going to throw a bunny in there, so get ready.'"
